Length: 3 volumes of manga, 39 épisodes of anime.
Happy ending or not? No. It's even unfortunately Bury your gays, but it's an old show (the manga is from the 70s, the anime from the early 90s), and I don't hate how it's done.
Who is the wlw? Rei has been in love with her estranged sister Fukiko since they were kids. Nanako will fall in love with Rei. This is the canon. You can interpret Mariko's obsessional "friendship" towards Nanako as romantic interest too.
Is there other representation? Nothing I can think about (I mean, they're all Japanese girls, but it's a Japanese manga, so it doesn't count as representation)
Warnings? Lots of them. Incest, suicide attempts, drug abuse, cancer, some adultery, death.
What about the plot? Nanako enters a prestigious high school. She will discover it's a hard world, full of rivalries, jealousy, and secrets. Or maybe it's she who's getting older and understands more things. Even her safe place - old friends, parents, the guy who she sends letters too as an older brother because she always wanted one - could have secrets too.
Also she will fall in love with a girl one year older, who dresses as a man and doesn't really care for the rules, and is very sad.
How good it is? I love it! I love the tragedy! Usually I don't get into high school romance, but here it's so dramatic! Well plotted, too, you get reveals all the time, and they make sense.
The animation of the anime (which adds a lot of subplots, but I actually love it better this way, it develops the characters more) is very expressive on the overdramatic side.
It's a bit of a guilty pleasure because it's probably not very good representation. But I'm a bit in love with Rei (like a lot of people). Cette entrée a été crosspostée au https://flo-nelja.dreamwidth.org/685871.html. Commentez où vous voulez.
